I've found that almost any plant that roots easily and quickly can be a good nurse cutting for other things. I have also experimented by planting a few bean seeds in pots with hard to root cutting, and this too has sometimes appeared to have been effective.
At the same time, I suspect there are some species that root easily that are the opposite of symbiotic...(grass seeds & ?. Unfortunately no one has done any extensive testing of this kind, so we don't have the data. Still, I've seen enough positive from nurse crops of many sorts, to have new respect for the idea of companion plantings.
