Re: Pittsburgh

Hi all,

Melanie Vassallo, a lurker from Long Island here. Doug's question about
gardens in Pittsburgh promted me to also ask about gardens. I will be
attending the national convention of the American Hemerocallis Society July
11th through the 14th. It's being held in Michigan this year.

The local daylily society sends a list of open gardens to tour but they are
all daylily gardens and I will already be seeing 9 daylily gardens on the
tour buses. We're flying into Detroit Metro and driving to Troy and will
have a rental car. I'd appreciate any suggestions of botanical gardens,
arboretums or fabulous nurseries in the area that we could visit.

Next week I'll be driving down to the Washington DC area. In the past I've
visitied Behnke's Nursery and Merrifields Nursery, this time I'm planning on
stopping at Carroll Gardens. Any other ideas? Perhaps in Southern Jersey?
Darryl App's place is a possiblity but again I'd prefer perennials over just
daylilies.

The perennial borders here are breathtaking right now. Waves of Ensata Iris,
Heucheras, Kniphofias, Nepetas, Oenotheras, Silene armeria, Lychnis
coronaria in both white and pink, Centranthus, Digitalis, Coreopsis,
Tradescantias, Euphorbias and even a unknown daisy that seeded itself into
my gravel driveway.

Thanks :-)
Melanie Vassallo
