Getting Educated on Photos
Getting my first book published has been a real education. It could also be
an education for others, in a different sort of way.
There was a series of photos from a university we (the publisher and I)
wanted to use in the book. The university wouldn't let us use them at all
(this was covered in another thread a while back), so the original
photographer was tracked down in hopes he would have variations we could
use. He wanted a fairly hefty amount for each photo, which wasn't good, but
he really dropped the hammer on himself when he wanted royalties for every
printing, not just every edition, of the book. The cost would have knocked
the budget totally, so the publisher decided to go with line drawings of the
subjects instead. The particular artist is very good, so I certainly didn't
have any problem, especially since we still have enough other photos to make
up a good color section for the book, just not of the diseases and insects.
If the photographer had considered that, he might have gotten a fair amount
of money and some good publicity. As it was, he got nothing.
The moral of the story is, while there's nothing wrong with being sure
you get a fair deal, don't price yourself clear out of the market.
Simplistic, but true.
