RE: invasives/definition

The Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council formulated this list some time ago.
Since that time most of the counties and some cities started to jump on the
bandwagon coming up with all sorts of plants to be ostracized. Only after
protest from concerned growers over what you could grow, and where, without
fines being imposed, did the Florida Dept. of Agg. take responsibility for
the official list. http://doacs.state.fl.us/%7Epi/plantinsp/noxioustbl.htm
Note schefflera is no listed by the State of Florida.

Subject: [GWL] invasives/definition

Here are the definitions used by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council
(www.fleppc.org):

Category I invasive: Invasive exotics that are altering native plant
communities by displacing native species, changing community structures or
ecological functions, or hybridizing with natives.

Category II invasive: Invasive exotics that have increased in abundance or
frequency but have not yet altered Florida plant communities to the extent
shown by Category I species.

Note that this list deals only with "exotics." Surely some native plants are
capable of being invasive???? The passionflower in my yard qualifies, in my
opinion, and it's a native plant.
