Re: offseason sales

Title: offseason sales
Hello Lon,
While there is some relation to weather patterns, business has been better that ever. We began early ( mid-February), did a bit of a dip for a short period, and then just kept on moving along. Still trickling in as with you and should have ended with weather too hot to ship in about two weeks back. We are shipping later than in past years.
The lion' share of business for us now comes from internet sales. In may ways that has been a blessing for we are no longer tied to local weather patterns directly. It is almost always good weather someplace in the US with gardeners thinking of plants and gardening. At times you can almost watch the bloom periods of certain well distributed plants march from south to north... gardeners see a plant in bloom and then order some for their gardens.
I was at a Master Gardener Herb & Garden Fair in Southern Indiana yesterday. Interesting to listen to the nursery owners talk. General run is about 20 to 25% lower sales this spring. Cooler than normal, wetter than normal here. Temps very close to records on the lows. This would be a cross section of anything from trees and shrubs, to herbs, to annual and bedding, perennials.

I have had more late orders this year than I've ever seen before.  Usually they trickle to a stop by mid May, but it's almost like the height of the season even now, when it's past the official cutoff date.  Apparently, with the cold winter and long, cold spring in most areas, no one thought to buy plants (or grape cuttings, in my case) until the weather looked more like it was going to warm up.  Or until they knew they HAD to get the orders in.
Have other growers, nurseries, etc. on the list had a similar burst of late orders?
