Buttermilk is a good fungal food and it is really the fungi that get the hard to digest parts of the stump. A mixture of baby oatmeal and good compost....one to one, put loosely into deeply drilled holes is quicker than buttermilk. The sugars feed bacteria...in this instance you want fungal dominance.
