I'm sure most of you have read the latest Quill & Trowel and learned that Amazon.com is selling numerous magazine articles as ebooks or edocuments for about $7 a download. I mentioned this previously on this listserv when I found a number of my articles for sale on Amazon. I contacted the magazine publishers who originally published my articles and found they didn't know this was happening, either. One publisher took legal action. The others have not. The American Society of Journalists & Authors is asking you to report if you've been a victim, too. I see a class action lawsuit on the horizon. I've already reported my copyright infringements by Amazon to them.
You also can do so by emailing amazonwatch@asja.org
Tell them what is for sale on Amazon that is yours. Also note if you actually registered the copyright.
To find if Amazon is selling your work, go to their site and search for your name under Ebooks or Google your name and see what comes up. That's how I first found that Amazon was selling my writing.
When a document is written, it is covered by copyright, but it must be registered if you are going to proceed with legal action. It's a good practice to register your copyrights quarterly for $30. That fee will cover any amount of articles. For information on how to do it, go to: http://www.asja.org/pubtips/copyrite.php
This information came from Erik Sherman of ASJA's Contract Committee.
