There are many diseases that belong in this family so please be careful when you spread the doom. You are probably referring to the species of Phytophthera that leads to SOD or sudden oak death , Phytophthora ramorum, which is playing havoc on the West Coast and is spreading East. It is not the same disease that can affect geraniums, petunias and other ornamentals and vegetables. There is extensive literature that you can find via Google as well as quarrantines that are hoped to slow the spread.
