Re: digital photography questions

Kate,

About CD's check out this link http://www.inkjetart.com/mitsui/index.html

About projectors go to www.cnet.com and search for digital projector reviews too. Plus try the search on Google. A best buy does not necessarily mean the best projector. I assume they mean the best projector for the money and that might be you best bet to start with and see how it works.

However, I'd go for 1024x768 pixels on the resolution versus 800x600. This is complicated to explain why and I'd search for an explanation on the web. The 1400 lumens is fine, the higher the number the better, sort of. The huge problem currently with digital projectors is calibration. The colors and rendition of the colors in the projected image will not match what you are seeing on your computer monitor, even a calibrated monitor, and certainly won't match the slide (assuming you scanned a slide or negative into a digital file). If color accuracy is important to you then digital projectors are not there yet but are coming. You can buy a calibrator from Gregtag called the Eye-One system but it is very expensive.

The CD decision is a no brainier. Better yet I do redundant backups on multiple portable hard drives with one back up on site and one off site. If you only have a small number of images CD are fine to start with but once you accumulate a large amount of files you'll go nuts burning and finding all the CD's.

The projector decision is an entire brave new world decision. Good Luck. I went with Kodak but that was 5 years ago.

Subject: Re: [GWL] digital photography questions

Last week PC magazine listed a Dell 1100MP as one of the best digital buys for projectors ($799).  It has 800x600 pixels SVGA (whatever that is) and 1400 ANSI lumens.  Does any one have experience with these newer lower priced projectors?  Are they really a decent start into the market where slides are obsolete?.

Also regarding storing the images.  Someone today asked me about the gold diskettes that are made from a different material to the normal DVD-r disks.  They are more expensive but suppose to last longer and with higher integrity of image.  Are they really any better?
