Re: Everything you needed to know about blogging

My sense is that the web is moving into another phase of usefullness - the
communication is moving beyond the traditional publishing paradigm of
expert/writer to user/reader. The current web system - web pages - is
based pretty much on that old paradigm no matter the technology employed.
This new shift - already well documented - to web 2.0 reverts us back to a
community based information sharing paradigm with roles for everyone in the
systm - from the expert to the novice. And while there's a ton of shaking
out to do on both the software side and the useability side - it's well on
the way.

My .02 really is aimed at those who want to make money writing. If the
writer is content to write for the local paper and the odd magazine - then
blogs are pretty much irrelevant.

On the other hand, the internet is eating away at traditional publishing
revenues. And if writers want to make money - they have to follow that
money. To the Net.

There will still be room in the world for dead-tree publishing and some
writers to make money there but for mid-list authors such as myself (with 7
books but no tv show or national radio) then the days of making a living
writing books is almost over.

The blog is the first step in that movement for garden communicators and
this site is a good reference point for learning all the buzzwords and
soaking up what's going on in the blogosphere.

So to directly answer your question - I don't think that folks need to go
there unless they want a good reference point to one way of looking at
blogs. Do I think everyone needs a blog? Nope - not if they're happy doing
what they're doing. Does somebody need to know everything on that site?
Only if they want to make money blogging is this a useful reference. :-)

I hope that's a tad clearer.

Doug - I'm curious to know why you think we all need to know about
blogging... did you mean that if someone is blogging they should know all
the info on that site, or did you mean that everyone should have a blog, and
will need that information?

thanks,
C.L.
