If a plant or product is very good, I'll write about it. Enthusiastically.
If it is very bad, I'll write about it. If it is run of the mill, I usually
won't mention it. Or if it arrives in bad condition and dies, I won't write
about it.

I, too, write about only what I grow or use. (Which is why you'll never see
a column on AAS in the year of introduction.) If there is something I want
for my garden, I go out and buy it retail. If there is something a producer
wants me to take a look at, I'll make room for it. And if it is something I
fall in love with, I'll push the daylights out of it.

As garden writers, I do think it is our job to make a big fuss over new
introductions if they are good. A producer puts a lot of effort and money
into new material, both development and roll out, and they deserve to make
some money. Furthermore, a successful roll out encourages them to do more
good work, while a failed roll out of a good plant can take it out of the
market (My Favorite Mum), which is not good for either the producer or the
gardener.

Readers benefit from us promoting the good. Otherwise they make their
choices based on a tag at Home Depot or magazine hype.
