So many threads here. This group certainly knows how to extrapolate,  expand, 
expound, digress and diverge. Where to begin?
-- I write tag text, along with other things that need to  both promote and 
inform. It's not easy to communicate what the  gardener needs to know in so 
little space, but the effort must be made to get it  right. Experience and a lot 
of anecdotal evidence teaches that gardeners trust  the printed word over the 
advice of most garden center employees. That can be  fortunate or unfortunate 
depending upon where one is shopping.
-- As an employee of a company that releases lots of proprietary plant  
material, I can say that we don't really mind if gardeners (or garden  writers) 
take a few cuttings to share with friends. Naturally, we'd prefer  that you buy 
another pot, but that kind of propagation doesn't cause us to lose  sleep. Most 
literature and tags say "Propagation for sale without  license is 
prohibited." Key words: "For sale." It's the bootlegging grower  taking thousands of 
cuttings that we worry about, not a few slips shared across  the hedge.
-- I hate sound bite journalism as much as anyone, but the American  
attention span has shrunk dramatically. One does what one must. A New  Plants 
presentation is a guaranteed seat-filler at any symposium.
