Julie,

Don't know if this helps, but the Butterfly House on Mackinac Island is the 
3rd oldest in the US. The story I remember is they started with gardens, but 
the butterflies kept getting in so they turned it into a butterfly house.

The owners were helpful the last time I visited.

Gosh, you just might be forced to visit...!
