New member introduction
Hello,
I've just joined the list and been asked to introduce myself, so here
it goes. I'm a freelance writer in LA who is currently trying to do
less marketing work for attorneys (lots of blogs and web pages) and
transition to more magazine work. I'm also a member of a community
garden in West LA (Ocean View Farms), and I'd pretty much rather be
gardening than writing. :) My husband and I just joined in January and
have really taken to it; we're there most weekends. We have a personal
plot with fruit and vegetables and a semi-public plot that our garden
calls an "independent project." This is supposed to be a California
natives garden and it's my big project right now. As some of you
probably know, the conventional wisdom is to NOT plant California
natives in the summer, so I've only done a little planting, but a lot
of planning and rock-arranging.
My garden writing work includes two articles on our community garden
for the local patch.com, plus two garden-adjacent articles on herbal
healing. I also have a handful of credits for LA-local publications
and legal-industry magazines. Before I went freelance, I was a
reporter at a five-day daily newspaper for the Los Angeles legal
community. You can see most of my magazine work at
http://www.wordofthelaird.com/magazines.html. I would really like to
use this list to figure out how to expand my garden-writing work: what
publications to pitch, that kind of thing. I belong to a general
freelancers' mailing list called UPOD and have found it to be mostly
very helpful and friendly.
I am currently tagging along to my husband's work conference in
Portland, Oregon. (He's a computer scientist, but one of the labs
attending this thing was giving away basil and sunflower seeds!) We
saw the International Rose Test Garden and the Japanese garden
yesterday. I'm going home tomorrow and am genuinely looking forward to
seeing what happened in the garden in my absence, especially since I
can't count on the weather to do any watering for me.
Cheers,
Lorelei Laird
