In doing extensive research for my book, Edible Flowers from, Garden to Palate, I came to the conclusion that you can't make any assumptions on edibility based on family, genus, or species.....and especially not common names. Recently I've been horrified to see in a number of articles and a couple of catalogs garden peas called "sweet peas", which are highly toxic. While I'll happily munch sage blooms and leaves (Salvia officinalis), most other sages, I wouldn't touch. Salvia elegans being the delicious exception!
Cheers,
Cathy

Toxic, like lupines, high in alkaloids, animals don't browse them so they can really take over. Right now every roadway in Western Oregon has their bright yellow blooms. When the seeds ripen you can hear the little projectile seeds popping away.
