Re: GWL Linked In passwords

Taking non-computer week but it's raining and I don't feel like doing some
of the other "projects" indoors. Lazy day....

Interesting link Mitch - I always look at this kind of thing and say when
somebody says it's totally secure and can't be hacked - it's time to get my
data out of Dodge. it's like that guy who had the identify theft site -
advertised all his personal data and said, "you can't hack me and my
identity." Took them what - a few days? ;-) But I'm a bit of cynic so....

My security is pretty simple. All files are backed up locally on hard
drives (thank you Mac Time Machine) on an ongoing basis. I also save every
major file to a local removable hard drive and Carbonite is taking care of
data in the cloud. (plus Google Drive for cloud storage) That means if I
lose a bit of hardware all files are secure. When I travel, I leave a
current drive with time machine backup at home and take the "rough use"
Lacie drive with me. The backup files have all the 1password data on them
as well but also encrypted with their security. I'm sure somebody could
hack 1Password but by the time they did that - - see next point.

For machines - I have"Prey" for the laptop. Somebody steals the laptop and
it will email me pictures of them and their gps location. ;-) Prey is
open source and available for all operating systems (and the initial level
is free for individuals)

The ipad and iphone are on Macs 'Find My Phone' software so I can lock 'em
down or delete the data from the other one or my laptop. All I need is a
connection and a device for locking them down (I do remember my iTunes
password for that reason and because I use the darn thing so often) ;-)

Password storage is via 1Password and that syncs with the iPad and iPhone
so all are up to date and as long as I have one of them, I can use them
anywhere but I never use high security passwords when travelling or login
into anything but basic email. You never know when somebody is using
key-tracker software or a system is compromised.

All I really have to do is remember several high-value passwords - for
1Password and financials. Then I let the software take care of everything
else.

I noted some of you have interesting systems of storing passwords that are
not particularly well encrypted - I've heard of folks using spreadsheets
or document files and even the contact manager ;-) These are not
particularly secure - and basic hackers can break "protected" files because
they're not designed to be very secure systems but rather deterrent
systems. You'll be fine as long as you don't lose your machine - then
you'll be kicking yourself very, very seriously (unless it's somebody
really tech-stupid who gets it). Find a good password manager for your
system (there are some good open source ones I understand but don't ask me
tonight what they are) and take the time to move your data.

And with that rambling note (sorry for the length) I'm going back to
"being kind to myself" as my physio once told me to be after some
strenuous work.

Doug

p.s. I'm sure Chris would have much more to add to this - he's the real
pro in tech and security around here
