Re: Garden pests - need your ID please

 Hi Cathy,

Over many years, we've tried nearly every deer repellent on the market --
hair, soap, blood granules, various sprays, netting individual plants,
netting groups of plants, etc. The dog is trained to chase, but not to
catch -- deer only. But deer pressure here is so intense and refreshing
the repellent in just-above-freezing temperatures was a such a pain, that
we ultimately opted for a Brenner's exclosure. We are fortunate to have
four acres, only one of which is inside the exclosure. There are huge
numbers of chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, and snakes in the garden, and
at least a half-dozen woodchucks that chew their way through the
exclosure, but no damage.

That's primarily because we have fruit and nut trees and plenty of clover
and broad-leaved weeds in the "lawn" (woodchucks love the latter), as
well as a compost pile for their fine dining experience. Chipmunk "herds"
periodically die back and then rejuvenate, so they are self-regulating.
I'm sure the snakes and neighbor's cats reduce some of the numbers.

We are no-kill here and expend our brain power figuring out how we can
all just get along -- as part of the web of life. Our reward is an
endless string of wildlife that parades across our porches, providing
hours of entertainment for us, our dog, and cat.

Regards,
Lois
