Judy, Have you ever tried a Rat Zapper?  It's powered by battery and  
does the job. Peanut butter does the trick says my son-in law, who  
swears by it. Two little red eyes glow in the dark to tell you when  
its "full. The kids live in an old community in the city. Once rats  
become established it's impossible to irradiate them, but you can go
