Re: GWL groundhogs, rats and city slickers
Hi, Cathy!
By far, without question, undoubtedly, no other comes close, our worst affliction has become voles. I would take deer, woodchucks, even rabbits if I had the chance to trade.
Voles are destroying just about everything in several gardens on our property, be they in shade, sun or mixed conditions. They are not deterred by soil texture and content; they dig and tunnel everywhere, regardless of soil compaction or moisture content.
I have resorted to the poison in the pipe approach. I load the pipe with 4 cakes which they empty in two days. We tried using snap traps but that became a full time job, stealing my time. As of today, I have over 15 pipes baited and flagged (I don't always remember where they are) and each day I see new holes where they have become active. So out I go to get more pipes and more poison. I buy it in the 75 cake tub.
Once the frequency of refilling traps goes down to once a week, I'll know I've made some progress. Until then, it's just slow torture watching each plant succumb to their endless appetites.
I garden in Connecticut, zone 5B.
