Interesting topic. I refuse to do work-for-hire,
although there have been moments when it has been tempting. I also try to avoid
publishers who demand all rights unless it's a topic that won't resell easily
and then I want a higher rate for all rights. Most of the articles I write can
be reworked and sold to a non-competing market so it is very important that I
retain rights. Editors have been all across the board when I talk about it. Some
refuse, some are willing to compromise, some have it in their contract already
(unfortunately too few).
I'm interested to hear what others have to
say.
