Our daily newspaper is the Richmond (VA) Times Dispatch (sometimes known as
the "Times Disgrace"). It has no garden section and has not had one for at
least the past 27 years. On Saturdays, it runs one garden column (a very
good one by Richmond writer Nancy Ross Hugo) on the front page of the
Leisure Section. There is a second garden column on Sunday, usually about
1/3 the length of Nancy's, culled from industry handouts by a "garden
editor," but what other function this person serves is hard to fathom.

The local three-times-a-week has never had a garden section or column, but
as with most small-town papers, we have a late summer Bizarre Vegetable
Season, when the paper prints pictures of prodigious tomatoes, or zucchinis
that look like Nixon, etc., etc.

Is it possible that the claim of gardening as the national pastime is wrong?
If gardening is so big, why are so many garden magazines re-trenching or
going out of business? Why are book publishers cutting back on their
gardening lists?
