More on names
Today I've been at a meeting at the Royal Horticultural Society. It
was convened by their Head of Science to bring together a wide range
of people with an interest in plant nomenclature: writers, book and
magazine editors, botanists, nursery people, label manufacturers and
including the people responsible for editing The Plant Finder. The
point was to extend the exploration of issues of plant nomenclature
beyond the relatively closed world of the botanists and out into the
commercial world.
It was not intended to make decisions, but the views expressed will
inform discussion at a conference in August in Toronto (4th
International Symposium on the Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants - more
at http://www.ihc2002.org/ihc2002/multi_day-symposia_S22.htm) at
which a revision of the International Code of Nomenclature for
Cultivated Plants will be ratified. These are the rules which govern
the naming of cultivated plants (as distinct from wild plants) and it
seems likely that, in general, the rules will be simplified, made
less restrictive and presented in a far more accessible way. Sounds
good to me...
I gather that a draft version of the new Code will be posted online
in good time before the conference so comments can be made; when this
happens I will post the url here for the benefit of the few
nomenclatural nerds on this list. Seriously, plant nomenclature is
fundamental to what we all do - when we give a plant name in our work
it has to be absolutely clear to which plant we are referring...
otherwise we are only spreading confusion. So we should all take an
interest.
