Re: National Pastime
The few "born and bred" Brits I know personally, a charming bunch, usually
refer to everything outside the house as the garden. My two favorite Brits,
physicists both, simply refer to various parts by name, i.e., the grass, the
shrubs in front of the house, the rhodos along the driveway, they are people
who enjoy the outdoors and moving around. Their academic background is
subatomic particles so they need advice on basic horticulture, but the
national fondness for the cultivated landscape is there.
