Mail bouncing

In trying to deal with the rash of mail bouncing that has been occuring
recently, I wrote to Topica.  I felt that the list should see the reply.
Not entirely encouraging, but at least some of you will understand, I hope.

The upshot of this all is that if there is a problem with mail bouncing,
I've pretty much run out of options.  You will have to get after your ISP if
you are having a regular problem with bouncing.

Either that, or the list will have to chance moving to a new server.

Hello,

Recently, improvements were made to the bounce handling mechanism
that Topica employs.  An increase in the number of bounces was
expected, and
the increase that you have displayed is within the predicted
limits.

Here is a little information on how Topica handles bounces.

If Topica's servers cannot deliver a message to a subscriber's
email address, the subscription will be changed from active
(receiving posts) to disabled (still subscribed but no posts sent
to them or accepted from them).  A subscriber will be disabled if
either:

1) Their email address hard-bounces once.
2) Their email address soft-bounces 63 times or for 3 days.

Soft  bounces refer to currently unreachable email addresses, the
result of temporary problems with the subscriber's mail host or
with routing delays across the Internet itself.  Hard bounces are
invalid or permanently unreachable addresses, the result of
closed or abandoned email accounts, people that left the company
they worked at, misspelled email addresses, etc.

Although bouncing addresses is not in Topica's control, we do
apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

In the last couple of weeks there has been a sharp rise in the
number of
bounced e-mails to members of my list (Gardenwriters).  Members
have tried
contacting their ISP's, unsubscribing and resubscribing, and have
had no
results.  The list below is one day's bounces, minus a few
@home.com address
that were deleted since @home has quit service.  In the past,
there were
usually one to three bounces every two or three days.  Now the
number of
bounces has increased every time I check lately.
    I have to assume the problem is with Topica, as all other
avenues have
failed.  I like Topica overall, but this problem is getting so
bad I am
losing list members.  If you can't fix this fast, I'm going to
have to take
the list elsewhere just to keep from losing members.
