Larry; I appreciate your comments. We have a serious problem with the way Americans want their ponds to be and at the same time want no maintenance, just like the rest of their landscape. There are making things very difficult. I get slammed by the environmentalist, and by the scorched-earth crowd at the same time, the zealots will not allow for a happy ground. Well guess what? Ponds are here to stay and we have to find a happy medium. Personally Ive drawn the line at no chemicals (bacteria only), and no ponds under the size of 11x16, and if you want koi 15x25. Its funny I get slammed on the left for what I do; but where is the outrage on the condition of our water. We not only have to add Dechlorinator at the beginning; but now we add a dechlorminator to protect the fish. Something to do with killing the fish by way of their gills. How ironic the water is safe enough for humans to drink, but this very same water will kill fish-does that seem right Lon, if you could see mile-a-minute-vine, (kudzu) in Tenn. And N. Carolina you would understand why anyone would be afraid of it. Water Hyacinths are great water purifiers, but in southern climes where they do not die back, they are indeed invasive There are a lot of complicated questions here and elsewhere in what we deal with, there are no easy answers. We must all learn to deal in the gray, it is not going to work in the black and white. As garden Writers we bear a responsibility to report the facts and let our readers make informed decisions (unless you are a opinion columnist), isnt that what honest an fair reporting is. I dont think that goldfish are going to be the end of civilized society, I just wish we could save the wetlands we have left Thanks for the letting me rant This is a well-informed, witty, intelligent group I am glad I am able to be able to share in it, thank you all.
