Re: You don't always need a query.

Brook, you have told us so little about yourself despite many posts. It's
hard to reference what you say, at times.  The obvious questions are what
did you edit and where is your e-course available?

Actually, Doreen, I did provide bio stuff when I first started posting.

I am a fulltime freelance writer and contract editor, with vegetable gardening, herbalism, self-sufficiency and related fields among my specialties. I've been writing about them about three years. Travel and outdoor recreation are other specialties. But, as a fulltimer, I'll write about anything somebody is willing to cut a check for.

On the gardening-related end, I've written for Mother Earth News (where, btw, I am masthead listed); Heirloom Farm and Garden magazine, OFA's Gardener's Companion; BackWoods Home; Kitchen Garden; and Smoke & Fire News. And, until it ceased publication, I did a monthly column about heirlooms for Le Bep's Garden. Anybody interested can see those by going to www.lebepsgarden.zipworld.com.au, and then clicking on The Heritage Garden. Starting in 2003 I will be the general editor for a new feature series Mother Earth is starting.

I don't think it's possible to work in this field without being a public speaker as well, and I do those sorts of presentations too. Alas, not enough of them; they're fun, and many of them pay well. . I will be one of the speakers, for instance, at Baker Creek Seeds' spring festival next month, and will be the keynote speaker at the GSHSS Tomato Tasting Festival next September.

I have a journalism degree from Boston University, and was a staff writer and editor for several trade and consumer magazines, along with newspaper and wire service experience before going fulltime in 1980, as a writer, PR specialist, and publications consultant.

I started the e-course in freelancing about a year or so back. This is set up as a one-on-one tutorial, aimed at the student's specific needs. The course is _not_ designed to be a writing class, but, rather, a marketing class. I teach people how to sell their work. However, editing queries and stories is a natural part of that process, so a lot of how-to-write-good stuff creeps in.

Gardening is the hardest field for freelancers. My most recent student only wants to write about gardening, however. Yet, using the techniques I taught her, in just a few months she sold stories and photos to several regional and national publications, ranging from Chicagoland Gardening on one hand, to Birds & Blooms and OFA's Gardener's Companion on the other.

Anyone interested in the course should contact me directly (BrookBarb@aol.com).

How's that Doreen? Enough bio material?

Brook
