Is this fair?

A while back I sent an article to a national magazine. They told me they
had someone writing a comprehensive piece on the same subject, but that my
article might be a good sidebar. A day ago I wrote to check on the progress
and was told that the author had decided just to use a quote from my piece.
It was included in the letter and it was the summing up paragraph from my
article that was pretty inclusive in many ways. So they aren't going to buy
my article, but they are using a prime bit of it for free as a quote.
Am I being naive, or did I just get shafted?
