I've written for newspapers all over the country, and beg to differ. The default option is "one-time newspaper rights."

If you multiple-sell to numerous papers (single-shot freelance pieces, not a regular column), it's a good idea to print that in the upper right hand corner of the manuscript, just to avoid any misunderstandings.

BTW, technically, the word "serial" refers to magazines and other publications published on a regular basis, but _excluding_ newspapers. For the broader sale you suggest as the default, it would be "first North American newspaper rights," and you could still sell that same piece to a magazine, or anthologize it in a book, or whatever.
