Re Round-up
Here is a question posed to Dr. Elaine Ingham regarding Round-up
decomposition and her answer. She is, for the uninitiated, the goddess of
the soil food web as expert as they come when it involves microbes, fungus
and soil and interactions. A real scientist. Interesting answer:

Q-3.)
I am interested in the Roundup controversy, specifically, how long Roundup
resides in the soil, and what its impact is on the soil food web. Have you
got test results from various applications strategies, in various soils?
Also, are the tests run with Roundup as formulated (including the inert
ingredients) or just on glyphosate itself. Is this a relatively "safe"
chemical in your opinion?
Thanks,

ANSWER-3)
Hi Diane -
We have data on Round-up effects, but I have not published them. Generally,
if the foodweb is healthy, round-up is used as a bacterial food resource, so
bacteria increase while fungi decrease as a result of competition with the
bacteria for N, P, S, etc.
The effect is with Round-up - the combination of glyphosate and the carrier.
We have not tested glyphosate alone.
If the foodweb is not healthy, then we see longer term effects on other
organisms, such as protozoa, nematodes and arthropods. I expect that
round-up is not decomposing in these situations and the possibility for
plant uptake would be significant.
Hope this helps -
Elaine Ingham
