RE: Copyright infringement

Since I am the infringer, I must confess I do not see the legal basis for
arguing that my sending a listserv an internet address is a copyright
infringement.  If anyone on the list used any material in the article for
their own personal financial gain; okay but then they are the nasty
infringers.  If I got any money or in kind compensation for giving the
reference to the list; okay.  But if I take a newspaper and give it to my
next door neighbor to check out an article or a recipe, is that copyright
infringement: probably in the hardnosed legal beagles view.  How stupid!
The New York Times is supposed to be America's newspaper.  If I refer a
friend or friends to an article, I may be generating some new subscribers.
If I am worried about some legal idiot coming after me for referring some
friends on a free listserv to an article, I would quickly stop making the
referrals and probably start warning friends away from the New York Times.
Lon, I trust your source was a good one.  I'm getting less and less
enthralled with lawyers as I age gracefully.

I've been told that posting an entire newspaper story to the list would
constitute copyright infringement.  I'm no legal expert, obviously.
   How about this as an alternative?  Give us a thumbnail synopsis so we can
decide we want to wade through the website or not.  If need be, mail copies
offlist to those that want to see the whole story but still don't want to
join the website.
