The Gardener

I, too, wrote for The Gardener (the last article will be a kill fee). I admired Tom Cooper's ability to take with him from Horticulture (I also write for Horticulture) some of my favorite writers — two of whom Graham mentioned, Christopher Lloyd and Wayne Winterrowd. I didn't drop my subscription because the magazine was boring, but because I find it difficult to subscribe to all of the publications for which I write, or may write, or want to write (it's the time as well as the money). I enjoyed reading The Gardener, and although some readers may have found it boring, I'm sure the same can be said by other people about other publications.

I did receive a note from Sara Beggs, managing editor, telling me that the magazine had ceased publication.

I was interested in the grading of Garden Gate, Horticulture and Fine Gardening. I have always considered FG to be the middle range of gardening expertise, and Horticulture for more knowledgeable gardeners. I also write for FG occasionally, and am careful to explain things in the simplest way, whereas with Horticulture I feel rather free to toss around all sorts of hort terms. I enjoy explaining as much as tossing, and am grateful to get the chance to do both.
