Re: service in the garden centre


When I'm not busy being a world-famous garden writer, I spend a day or two
at a large nursery/garden centre operation as a wholesaler. I just know the
boss is going to have a chat with me but...

Doug, I believe, has the right of it. Independents flat out can't compete
with the boxes on price. The product is where these guys are vulnerable and
where "we" have the edge.

I'd like to add one more bit though. It's not just having a wide variety of
product but it's the ability to provide a quality plant throughout the
season.
And the ability to explain to the customer how to care for that plant.

This is where most of the boxes fall down, not enough competent people to
take care of what they have.
