Re: new ideas
Hello Marty,
As both a writer and a nursery owner I find your statement about
nurseries bemoaning publicity on a plant they do not have a bit strange... I
write about plants I do not carry here at the nursery. Sometimes I even
write about a plant I do not carry and will not carry simply because I grow
and enjoy it... not to sell. If you write about something new to me and I
like the plant for my garden, then I usually check your references or do a
search through my brokers and wholesalers catalogs. Never occurred to me to
complain about "new merchandise" coming to market.
When I send in an article with references I select nurseries I have had
some experience with and carry the plants discussed in the article. The
editors have final say on their preferences of nurseries that actually end
up in print. So... the answer for here is follow your bellybutton and do a
wonderful article on a new plant, see if you can locate good sources. If
not, a paragraph on its being new to the market .. "coming soon to a garden
center near you". To be honest, most times I see that statement I know, or
think I know, where to obtain the plant. Most nurseries who do their
homework, will at the least, know where to begin looking.
Do not know who you are speaking to, but in my book they have a negative
attitude. Move on to those with a positive attitude who can assist you in
the next adventure.
