Note this line in the message to GWA members below which has been
distributed to this list: "Please do not
distribute this message or these access codes to non-members. Your

OK, the access codes have been taken out but he message has been
distributed . GWA members are specifically requested not to do
this.

I have removed the access codes from this, so non GWA members can't access the survey, but I felt it was something the group would want to know about, GWA and non GWA members alike.

Spring Garden Trends Research commissioned by the Garden Writers Association.
GWA is proud to announce the results of its ground breaking Garden Trends
Research project and is making it immediately available to all GWA members.
You may access the 2003 Spring survey NOW at the NEW GWA website at:

Two more surveys will forecast trends for summer and fall and will be made
available through the website as well.
The 2003 Spring Garden Trends Research is unique in that it forecasts
consumers' future plans for the spring growing season. The nationwide phone
survey includes demographic data and insight on the future plans of all U.S.
consumers in regard to their spring gardening activities and spending.
How will the war affect their plans?
Will they be planting flowers, woody plants, containers,
vegetable gardening? What about lawn care?
How do consumers expect the weather to influence
their gardening this spring?
Use this data freely in your writing and marketing efforts. Use it to inform
your readers and impress your editors. Put it to work and take advantage of
the timeliness of the research. Be sure to refer to it as the 2003 Spring
Garden Trends Research and credit GWA as the source.
We anticipate using this prestigious primary research to promote GWA as an
authoritative resource for the gardening industry and the general public.
GWA members will benefit from the enhanced reputation as knowledgeable and
well-informed garden communicators.
Take advantage of the national wire service
release GWA will issue on March 28.
The attached press release is being sent to you in advance of our publicity
campaign to promote the 2003 Spring Garden Trends Research to the wire
services, top newspapers across the country and industry leaders. GWA
members are encouraged to use this advanced notice period to your advantage.
Submit the information to your editor in advance of the wire release.
Let editors know you are a resource for this data and the release addresses
only one of several important information issues covered in the full survey
report. Finally, be prepared to handle general inquiries about the research
and refer specific questions to Robert LaGasse, Executive Director, Garden
Writers Association (703) 257-1032.
Once again, please take advantage of this original data produced exclusively
for GWA members.
It is yours to use!

Gardeners Undaunted by War in Iraq
March 28, 2003, MANASSAS, VA. - Most American consumers plan to plow ahead
as usual with their spring gardening plans despite the war in Iraq, a new
poll shows.
A survey of 1,002 consumer households by the Manassas, VA-based Garden
Writers Association found that more than two-thirds of those surveyed plan
to spend the same or more on plants this spring even if the country is at
war.
Fifty-five percent of the households surveyed said that despite the war,
they planned to spend the same this year on flowers and ornamental plants
(flowers, trees and shrubs), while 12 percent said they planned to spend
more. Twenty-one percent planned to spend less on ornamentals.
In the category of vegetables and fruits, 57 percent of the public planned
to spend the same, 13 percent planned to spend more and 14 percent planned
to spend less despite the war's status.
"These responses are encouraging and further support that gardening provides
important relief from the pressures of daily events, especially during
periods of significant economic and political uncertainty," states Nona
Wolfram Koivula, GWA president and executive director of the National Garden
Bureau.
Unlike the World War II period when edible "victory gardens" were the rage,
flowers and other ornamental plants are tops on gardeners' planting lists
this year.
Flowers will be the top choice of 27 percent of the public this spring,
followed by vegetables and fruits at 24 percent, grass at 18 percent and
trees and shrubs at 11 percent.
Suburban dwellers, married couples, those with higher education and higher
incomes, Caucasians and females all showed a stronger preference for flowers
over edibles.
However, when asked which type of plant they would spend more money on this
year, 41 percent of the consumers planned to increase their spending on
edibles vs. 36 percent who planned to increase their spending on
ornamentals.
This national survey was funded as part of a garden trends research project
of the Garden Writers Association, a non-profit organization of more than
1800 professional garden communicators. The phone survey was conducted March
5-9 by TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence. At the 95 percent confidence level, the
margin of error for respondents overall is +/- 3.2 percent.
