Re: Who's the Audience (let's be honest)

Let's be honest: if you could afford a staff to do most of the gardening, and so could have the garden of your dreams and limit your
labor to the tasks that appealed to you, wouldn't you be happy? Ask people how many want a clean house and how many want to
clean the house... most would honestly reply that they want the clean house without the labor. Most people would also want the
gourmet meal without cooking as well, and fewer people will always enjoy the process as much as the product, be it gardening,
cleaning or cooking.

What I try and convey when I speak, write, or do my program is that there are GIFTS in the work. (A book that explores the gifts in
housework is "Plain and Simple" by Sue Bender. It's a book that all you love-the-process people might enjoy.) Some of my
audiences/readers will get it, and some won't. But when we garden communicators give them the information they need to be
successful, we help them to stay involved with the garden on whatever level they can participate.

The "you can have an instant garden with these beautiful plants" folks bring people to gardens and plants - WE keep them involved
by helping to problem solve when things don't go well, providing help about maintenance, and information about other plants once
they are "hooked."

I spoke to a garden club in NH this week and they welcomed seven new members, many of them young. Our audience will always
consist of people with a large range of interests, abilities, and willingness to work. Sounds like life to me!
