Philadelphia Flower Show
Reporting in. Nancy and I drove 11 hours on Sunday, did the show on
Monday and drove home 12 hours on Tuesday; now give me a better example
of crazy. Nancy had never seen the show, so we figured it had to be
done. I had visited the show 12 or 15 times over the years living in
Philly, so was interested in any changes in the five years since I've
visited that extravaganza.
The five or six of the main displays were just as spectacular and
original as before. The rest of the main displays are beautiful, but
your eyes glaze over after seeing more than six or eight of them. What
I noticed most was the major improvement in the quality and
sophistication of the trade area where all manner of very neat (an
expensive) stuff is being sold. They've really improved that part of
the show. Someone finally realized that we mature adults can use some
place to sit down at one of those shows and have surrounded the show
with rows of comfortable folding chairs; good pr.
The Region 2 meeting had over 100 GWA members in attendance. One of the
speakers did not show up, so Liz Ball, a panel moderator, was stuck with
having to revise the program at the very last minute; it was okay, not
terrific; not her fault. A number of GWA authors were in attendance,
giving lectures and signing books.
I learned that Nancy and I were not the only visitors from Michigan. A
group from northern central Michigan rent a bus and go to the show every
year. They ride over night, do the show, and ride home over night.
While we are bit weary this morning, it was worth the trip; mostly
because I could get a real cheese steak!!!
Later,
Jeff Ball
