Ever since Patti Hagan stopped writing for the WSJ
a number of years ago, there has been little or no coverage of the green
industry, personal gardens or personalities in that esteemed
newspaper. It's read daily by most business people in the country and
is an important tool for their decision making.
Having worked with editors who don't garden, I
understand how they simply have a blind spot in regard to the importance
and popularity--and even financial vlaue of gardening. Thus, I was happy
to meet Bart Ziegler, Deputy Marketplace
Editor of the WSJ at the Philadelphia Flower Show.
While I missed a March 22 (?) article about the
Show (wasn't it earlier--even during the show??) and don't know who wrote it, I
do know Bart joined GWA and (yes, he is young) but he seems very sincere,
anxious to learn about the industry AND he's also very interested in writing
about green topics.
Since few freelancers appear in the WSJ, I think
that's a step in the right direction for the paper. Today (March 24),
for example, they have aan AP article about "Genetically Modified
Food Items. . . " The boxed subhead reads "There have been no
reports of illnesses from any GM foods despite dire warnings". . . . . is this
what business people need to hear????
