Re: George Ball's NYT op-ed article
Okay, we're getting closer: "With some parties seemingly overeager to outlaw
non-native plants, as a gardener I am concerned."
Who are these parties? I know many native plant growers, advocates and
enthusiasts. I know no one -- okay, maybe one guy -- who wants to rip out and
destroy every day lily and Hosta in the US.
I have a good friend who runs a nursery, a major grower of native species.
He is also active in local activities such as the native plants symposium at
Millersville U each year (a spinoff of Cullowhee (sp?) ). His take on this
alleged issue -- I'm paraphrasing, but this is close -- is, "I encourage people
to grow natives to expand the plant palette, not to restrict it."
I ask again: Who are these native plants bullies George is so worried about?
Who is threatening gardeners' rights to plant non-natives? Name some names.
