Garden Show Financing
We were told by Kay Estey, San Francisco Show Director, that the cost
of gardens ran the gamut from $5,000 to over a $100,000. Because it
was my first time, and I lived two hours away, there were a lot of
things I didn't anticipate--e.g., the hotel and food costs for three
days of building and two days of tear down after the show was over--
no one on our crew could go home for the night. Our set, which showed
a house and garden with a fully-integrated greenroof/water catchment
system, had to be built in a warehouse, then broken down, transported
to the show, and rebuilt in place--on 1,000 sq. ft. space.
I'm working on a book about my mid-life career change to garden
design (from university professor), and I have a chapter on doing the
show. There were a lot of crazy things that happened at the show, as
the gardens came together (one poor designer had a waterfall garden,
and 30 minutes before the show, the water in his set became
"electrified"--which of course meant that they had to shut his main
feature off. He was in tears until they figured the cause and got it
fixed, 5 minutes before all the designers and their teams were told
they had to finish and leave the floor. If any of you are looking for
an interesting story, just interview a show director and some of the
designers who've built gardens for shows!
