This is wise and a win-win. You don't feel "taken
advantage of" and they feel they got a great deal.

Thinking of what you'll charge whom ahead of time is a
great idea because you're not caught off guard. (I
don't tend to think quickly on my feet and sometimes
have lost gigs because they weren't able to pay (and
didn't offer to negotiate) or I've spoken for free to
groups that ended up making money off the talk.)

I think asking some questions upfront (if they're
charging, venue size, equipment available, expected
attendance, audience background, etc. etc.) will also
help me know which of my speaker fees to charge.
