Re: Hardy Succulents

I would like to be among the first to congratulate Saxon Holt and Gwen
Kelaidis for doing a remarkable job on their newly released book, "Hardy
Succulents." The text is excellent -- engaging, informative and
comprehensive -- and Saxon's photos attest to his reputation of being one of
the top horticultural photographers in the world.

I eagerly awaited the book's release, and squirreled away a copy at the SF
Flower & Garden Show, buying it before his presentation because I suspected
it would sell out. I also was not disappointed in the way succulents were
used at the show; as I noted during my own presentation, "you can't walk 10
feet without tripping over one." It seemed at least half the display
gardens, if not more, incorporated succulents to some extent, almost as
though it wouldn't be cool not to. And the most popular display, by a team
spearheaded by Garden Design magazine, was almost entirely succulents. So I
was in clover, or perhaps I should say aloes.

Saxon's book, btw, does not compete with my book ("Designing with
Succulents"), but rather dovetails with it beautifully, as mine is primarily
about those splashy succulents that grow in Zones 8 and above (and of
course, in containers and greenhouses everywhere), and his showcases those
that are smaller, jewel-like and cold-hardy (sedums, sempervivums, and the
like). "Hardy Succulents" is a must-have for anyone who wants to keep up
with gardening trends, and who enjoys the exquisite geometry of these tough,
unthirsty plants.

Listmates - My new book is just out and already selling well. In
fact, at the San Francisco Garden Show last week, the official
bookseller for the show sold out before my presentation. Deborah Lee
Baldwin's book sold out too and we are both hoping the interest in
succulents is only starting. My book, Hardy Succulents from Storey
Publishing, co-authored by Gwen Kelaidis should be particularly good
for colder climates and rock gardeners as Gwen is in Denver and
wanted gardens photographed down to zone 5. I photographed Ed
Snodgrass's green roofs in Maryland, Stonecrop in New York,
Peckerwood in Texas, and at Tony Avent's Plant Delights among many
other private gardens.

The publisher has sent out books for reviews and hopefully many of
you already are getting it. If not, and you are a book reviewer,
please contact Wes Seeley at Storey for a copy.
Wesley.Seeley@storey.com Of course, you will give it rave reviews
once you get it .... <g>
