Re: Power Point Poisoning: The medium is not the toxin

Kate, agreed: I'd never knock anyone for putting plant names into images. That's one of PowerPoint's most powerful points. When you have to spell botanical Latin for your audience, it disrupts and distracts. Name (correctly spelled!) on slide saves lots of time. It's speakers who put their whole talk on the screen and then read it aloud that makes me squirm. There's a place for that in the classroom, where the "audience" will be tested on the material and reiteration is a good thing; but for most talks, it's overkill.
You CAN have 35mm text slides made. I still have some from old, pre-LED-projector talks. But the process involves PowerPoint.

I showed a caryopteris today and three people wanted it spelt.
I fully embrace this new technology that allow botanical names,
and common names to be put onto a screen. Putting your whole dialog there,
and giving a handout that reiterates that dialogue is not using the tools at
their best.
