TC,
Sometimes bills are introduced with extreme viewpoints or agendas. Because they are introduced does not mean that they will pass as written, or that they will pass at all. Occasionally bills are introduced in order to "test the waters" - special interest groups want to see just what they will be able to get away with, or what they might sneak by the American public. Other times bills are proposed because, why not? They might get away with it when everyone is focused on something else like AIG or White House gardens.
Too much of the time the public doesn't even know what is being discussed, let alone passed. To my mind, it is NEVER a bad idea to make people aware of what our congress people and senators are discussing and considering. And it is always a good idea to express dismay at these trial balloons that you or I may find problematic or downright appalling. For that reason, I wrote my representatives about HR 875, and I the White House to applaud the kitchen garden.
But then, I came of age in the '60's when we believed that the individual voice had power.
all the best,
C.L.
