Re: Paulownia

Hi Jodi and all,
The species Paulownia tomentosa is recognized as an invasive weed in
CT. I've seen it be weedy in PA around Allentown as well. It is a
dieback shrub here in Central NY USDA zone 5 although I have seen it
bloom maybe once in 15 years or so in a sheltered spot in the city.
That tree is about 25 feet tall.
I would be suspicious about sterility claims. It may be self sterile
but produce perfectly viable seed if naturalized types are nearby.
That was the case with the Lythrum salicaria cultivars that were sold
and I have my doubts about Rhamnus frangula Fineline as well.
