Re: Criticisms of article about blogs and garden writing
I take great exception to Nina Koziol's comments about garden blogs. There
are some incredibly well-written blogs out there, some written by
professional garden writers, some written by professional writers such as
myself, and some written by people who are simply good writers. The
opinions expressed therein are the opinions of actual gardeners, based on
their own, personal experience, in their own gardens. It may be merely
anecdotal evidence of the way a plant performs, for example, rather than a
rigorous scientific test, yet the conclusions reached are valid for the
particular circumstances.True, blogs tend to have a more informal tone, but
not all posts are "sound bites." There are many in depth discussions or
analyses of plants, garden design, and garden philosophy. Each blog is
unique, with its own strengths and weaknesses. Each should be evaluated
individually.
I have noted many typographical errors and even some substantive errors in
gardening books and magazines. I am not going to accuse them of being
amateurish on that basis. Garden blogs should not be subjected to higher
scrutiny.
