Who are we?
The Delaware Center for Horticulture is the only nonprofit membership
organization that mobilizes and inspires community greening statewide in
urban and suburban environments.
What do we do?
We use plants as a tool to educate and empower others. Working together,
we create neighborhoods that are healthier, more attractive and
ecologically sustainable. We plant trees, beautify parks and public
spaces, and develop community gardens.
Why does it matter?
The work of TheDCH strengthens the social fabric, and builds more
livable towns and cities by enhancing the environmental, economic and
aesthetic qualities of our communities.
Simply put, TheDCH is about "plants and people."
Founded in 1977, the Center's site in Wilmington, DE is an oasis in the
city. The beautiful facility includes a public demonstration garden that
backs up to Brandywine Park, a lending library, an art gallery, a large
meeting room and a greenhouse. We host many weddings and corporate
events every year.
TheDCH supports 16 active community gardens; organizes city park
improvement projects, beautifies Delaware's roadsides with native
vegetation; maintains the landscaping of many traffic medians and
streetscapes; leads regional projects to enhance Delaware's urban
forests; and provides educational programs for children, teens, and
adults. We have more than 600 active and dedicated volunteers.
