Re: is gardening too complicated?

An interesting discussion. Here are my 2 cents.
I don't want most plants to live forever, and I'd much rather have the readers be thrilled when something lives longer than anticipated then have them be devastated when a plant reaches the end of its normal life span. People think trees live forever and don't understand the difference between an oak which should outlive us all and a peach or cherry which will succumb to borers or black knot in a decade. Most people keep ugly overgrown plants hanging on much longer than they should. They are scared of rejuvenation pruning, when that's possible. I also think that coping with death is a valuable lesson for everyone and the garden is the best place to learn.
