I agree wholeheartedly and have made the point to book publishers that
they should be investing in the significant back-end production costs
of making their traditional books more interactive. They invest in
design staff, paper, warehousing etc with "regular" books and should
equal amounts of production costs into finding a design model for new
publishing, expecting it to pay back in a new revenue stream
I think this means any of us negotiating contract must be clear
about electronic rights. As a photographer I know I must routinely
sign over electronic rights to my photos. But this applies to
electronic rights to photos in a book or magazine in the same format
as the print project. My American Meadows book is available in Kindle
(and soon iPad) which is a good thing because I will receive
royalties from the distribution of electronic versions. This is what
Doug means by "whomping" a book on-line, and in the not too distant
future this sort of reading of electronic versions of traditional
books on electronic tablets will not be engaging enough for new media.
The new books will need to be more interactive and thus a different
product than the traditional book. This creation of a new product,
even using some of the same text and illustrations, is a new revenue
stream for publisher and creator alike. Rights to these sorts of
electronic products must be kept separate.
