Do an Internet search on "companion planting" along with "research"
and "studies"

You will see references to hundreds of scientific studies done by both
government run and private agricultural institutes around the world
confirming the validity of certain companion plantings in either
improving crop yields or reducing insect damage.

At the same time note that there are other studies invalidating
certain inter-cropping claims that could be considered part of the
folklore.
