Hi Sandie,
Generally speaking, that's nonsense. A URL is the most basic building
block of the Web, and browsers have been recognizing them for ages.
Of course, that applies to URLs that have a http: prefix. Your
mileage may vary with other link types.
If your browser can't find the page there's probably something
else going on. If the page doesn't display properly, is missing
content, etc. then it's probably Internet Explorer's fault.
The Internet is a Complicated Beast, and there are all kinds of
reasons why things might not work. Your ISP might have a faulty
DNS server, or a proxying cache to limit Web traffic and is
caching a one-time error on a remote page. The site may have
had a temporary DNS hiccup, but other servers are then
caching that hiccup (called a negative cache) for an indeterminate
amount of time.
You might have anti-virus scanning software on your machine that
restricts access to sites that it might erroneously thing are
bad. Internet Explorer also has fairly complicated Internet
security settings that could restrict access too (although I
think you'd usually get a popup window).
I say stick with what you like, but install Google Chrome just
to use when Internet Explorer doesn't work (that will confirm if
it's an IE issue or a system issue) or when a page won't display
properly.
Personally, I use Chrome. It's one of the most secure Web browsers
out there and it's faster for me than Firefox was. It also has great
programming tools. But everyone's needs are different...
